Karen's All-on-X Dental Implant Smile Transformation at Stubbs Dental Utah

For decades, Karen lived without many of her back teeth.

She began losing teeth in her 20s. But for years, she learned to adapt. As time went on, however, the teeth she still had began to chip, break, and wear down. Eating certain foods became increasingly difficult, food frequently became trapped between her teeth, and eventually, even her front teeth began to fail.

Karen knew she needed to do something, but she also knew what she didn’t want.

Traditional dentures weren't the solution she envisioned for herself. She worried about having teeth that could move or fall out, feel unnatural, or need to be removed daily. Instead, she wanted a strong, secure smile that would allow her to eat comfortably, smile confidently, and stop worrying about what might happen to her teeth next.

After years of considering dental implants, Karen finally decided it was time.

With the help of Dr. Bryce Richards and our Stubbs Dental Murray team, Karen restored her smile with All-on-X dental implants.

Today, she can enjoy foods she had missed, laugh without covering her mouth, and focus on creating memories with her grandkids without worrying about her teeth.

Her advice to others considering the same decision? “If you can get dental implants, do it!”

Living With Missing and Failing Teeth for Decades

Karen had been missing many of her back teeth since her 20s. Although she was able to live without them for years, losing teeth can have consequences that extend beyond the visible gaps in your smile.

Every tooth has a purpose. For example, your back teeth play an important role in grinding and chewing food while also helping maintain your bite.

As Karen continued to lose teeth, she had fewer healthy teeth available to handle the demands of everyday chewing. Eventually, the teeth she had left began to deteriorate.

She began experiencing pain. Food would get caught between her teeth. Certain foods became harder to eat comfortably. Her bite and smile had changed.

And there was another effect that couldn't be seen as easily.

Karen found herself covering her mouth when she laughed and smiling without showing her teeth.

After living with these challenges for years, she reached the point where she was ready for a more comprehensive solution.

What Happens When Missing Teeth Aren’t Replaced?

It can be easy to think that losing a back tooth isn't a major concern, especially when the gap isn't visible when you smile. However, missing teeth can affect much more than appearance.

When a tooth is lost, the bone in that area no longer receives the same stimulation it received from the tooth root. Over time, this can contribute to deterioration of the jawbone. Bone loss can happen much faster than people realize. Within the first year after losing a tooth, the bone in that area can lose up to 50% of its width, with much of that change happening in just the first few months.

Depending on the number and location of missing teeth, tooth loss can also affect chewing and the way forces are distributed throughout the mouth. At Stubbs Dental, we've seen many patients who gradually adapted to eating on one side of their mouth or avoiding certain foods altogether without realizing how much their missing teeth had changed their everyday routines.

Some potential consequences associated with missing teeth can include:

  • Changes in chewing ability
  • Changes to your bite
  • Additional stress on remaining teeth
  • Jawbone deterioration in areas where teeth are missing
  • Changes in facial structure as bone is lost
  • Difficulty eating certain foods
  • Changes in confidence or willingness to smile

Bone loss can also influence future treatment. In some cases, significant loss of jawbone may mean additional procedures are necessary before dental implants can be placed.

That's one reason it's important to talk with a dentist about your options rather than simply learning to live with missing teeth.

Why Karen Didn’t Want Traditional Dentures

When Karen started thinking seriously about replacing her teeth, one thing was particularly important to her: she wanted her new teeth to feel secure.

“I didn't want dentures,” she said.

Karen worried that removable dentures wouldn't fit the way she wanted them to or might feel like something foreign in her mouth. She didn't want to worry about her teeth moving, coming out, or needing to remove them every day.

She wanted something fixed.

For patients like Karen who are missing many teeth, have widespread dental problems, or are facing the loss of their remaining teeth, full-arch dental implants can provide another option. Unlike conventional dentures that rest on the gums, dental implants are anchored into the jawbone and support the replacement teeth.

For Karen, that difference was important.

What Are All-on-X Dental Implants?

3-2

All-on-X dental implants are a full-arch tooth replacement solution designed for people who are missing most or all of their teeth or whose remaining teeth can no longer be predictably restored.

Rather than replacing every missing tooth with an individual implant, the All-on-X procedure uses strategically positioned dental implants to support an entire arch of fixed replacement teeth.

At Stubbs Dental, All-on-X can be used to replace the:

  • Upper arch
  • Lower arch
  • Or both arches

The implants are surgically placed into the jawbone, where they act as anchors for the new teeth. This creates a stable foundation that doesn't rely on removable adhesives or simply rest on top of the gums like conventional dentures.

Dental implant treatment isn't identical for every patient. Bone structure, gum health, medical history, remaining teeth, bite, and other factors all play a role in determining the appropriate treatment plan. A comprehensive consultation is necessary to determine whether All-on-X is right for an individual patient.

Creating a Smile That Looked and Felt Like Karen

Dental Implant Before and After Stubbs Dental

Restoring a smile isn't just about replacing teeth.

Karen wanted her new teeth to function properly, but she also wanted to feel comfortable and confident with the way they looked.

Throughout her dental implant journey, Dr. Richards worked closely with Karen to customize her smile, paying attention to details including her bite, tooth shape, shade, and overall appearance.

One of the changes Karen noticed was the correction of her bite. Her previous dental condition had affected the way her teeth came together, and she also felt that her old smile showed more gum than she wanted.

Her new smile was designed with those concerns in mind.

Getting Back to the Foods She Had Missed

Before treatment, missing and deteriorating teeth had made certain foods difficult to eat for Karen. After completing her dental implant treatment and receiving her final teeth, foods that had once been challenging could become part of her life again.

Some of the foods Karen was excited to enjoy included nuts, chips and salsa, and corn on the cob.

For someone who hasn't experienced extensive tooth loss, being able to bite into a favorite food may seem like a small thing. But for patients who have spent years modifying how they eat, choosing softer foods, chewing only in certain areas, or avoiding foods they love, it can mean much more.

Dental implants are designed to provide a stable foundation for replacement teeth, which can help restore chewing function.
