Heather’s All-on-X Dental Implant Smile Transformation at Stubbs Dental Utah

Heather relied on removable teeth for much of her adult life.

She wore a top flipper for about 15 years after gum disease caused several of her teeth to become loose and require extraction. She later needed a bottom flipper as well to replace additional missing teeth.

What started as a way to replace missing teeth became a daily source of discomfort and frustration. Her partials would get stuck, her remaining teeth shifted, and she had to remove them every night before going to bed.

But the impact went beyond her oral health.

Heather became increasingly self-conscious about her smile. She stopped showing her teeth in photos and worried about how they looked when talking with customers at work.

She knew something had to change.

Heather first visited a dentist who recommended fixing her teeth individually. However, that treatment plan would have cost more, and she was concerned that she might need additional dental work down the road. Heather then came to Stubbs Dental Implant Center and chose All-on-X dental implants to replace her failing teeth with a fixed, long-term solution.

Today, she can eat comfortably, smile confidently, and enjoy everyday life without the frustrations she dealt with for years.

Looking back, Heather describes getting dental implants as the “best decision” she has ever made.

And her only regret? She wishes she had done it sooner.

What Is a Dental Flipper?

A dental flipper is a type of removable partial denture used to replace one or more missing teeth.

It typically consists of replacement teeth attached to an acrylic base that rests against the gums and can be taken in and out of the mouth.

Flippers can serve an important purpose. They are often used as a temporary or relatively affordable way to replace missing teeth, especially while someone waits for a more permanent restoration.

However, they are still removable appliances rather than permanent replacements for natural teeth.

Depending on the design and the individual patient, removable partials can come with frustrations such as:

  • Movement while eating or speaking
  • Difficulty chewing certain foods
  • Soreness or irritation
  • Food getting trapped around or underneath the appliance
  • Increased plaque accumulation if oral hygiene is difficult
  • Changes in fit as the mouth changes over time
  • Additional stress on the remaining teeth in certain designs

That doesn’t mean wearing a partial denture will automatically damage your teeth. Research suggests removable partial dentures can be successfully maintained, particularly with good oral hygiene, appropriate design, and regular dental care. However, plaque control and ongoing maintenance are especially important for protecting the teeth and gums around a removable appliance.

For someone like Heather, who was already dealing with gum disease and compromised teeth, continuing to rely on removable partials wasn’t the long-term solution she wanted.

How Gum Disease Can Lead to Loose and Missing Teeth

One of the underlying problems Heather experienced was periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease.

Periodontitis affects more than just your gums. As the disease progresses, inflammation and infection can damage the tissues and bone that support your teeth.

Over time, this can cause teeth to become loose, shift, or eventually be lost.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), periodontitis is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. The CDC also reports that about 4 in 10 U.S. adults age 30 and older had some level of periodontitis based on national data from 2009–2014.

Warning signs can include:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Receding gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Changes in your bite
  • Pain while chewing
  • Changes in the way a partial denture fits

One of the challenges with gum disease is that it can become serious before you realize how much damage has occurred.

For patients with advanced periodontal disease, saving every natural tooth individually may not always provide the most predictable long-term solution.

When Fixing Every Tooth Individually No Longer Makes Sense

Before coming to Stubbs Dental, Heather visited another dental practice to see what could be done to save her remaining teeth.

The proposed treatment plan involved repairing her teeth individually and would cost approximately $50,000.

But the price wasn’t Heather’s only concern.

Even after making that investment, she worried that she could continue experiencing dental problems and need additional treatment in the future.

That left her wondering whether there was another way forward.

Instead of continuing to repair individual teeth one at a time, Heather began looking for a more comprehensive solution.

That search led her to Stubbs Dental Implant Center.

What Are All-on-X Dental Implants?

All-on-X Dental Implants at Stubbs Dental Utah

All-on-X is a full-arch dental implant treatment designed for patients who are missing most or all of their teeth or whose remaining teeth can no longer be predictably restored.

Instead of placing an individual dental implant for every missing tooth, several strategically positioned implants are placed in the jaw to support a complete arch of teeth.

The restoration is secured to the implants, creating a fixed set of teeth that does not need to be removed each night like a traditional denture or flipper.

All-on-X may be an option for patients experiencing:

  • Multiple missing teeth
  • Advanced gum disease
  • Loose or failing teeth
  • Extensive tooth decay
  • Broken or severely worn teeth
  • Failing crowns, bridges, or other dental work
  • Difficulty wearing traditional dentures or partials
  • A combination of dental problems affecting most of the mouth

Candidacy for All-on-X dental implants depends on several factors, including your overall health, jawbone density, gum health, remaining teeth, and ability to maintain good oral hygiene. The best way to find out if you qualify for full-mouth dental implants is to consult with a dentist. They will evaluate your oral health, discuss your goals, and determine which treatment option is best for you. At Stubbs Dental, we offer free dental implant consultations.

Eating Comfortably Again

One of the biggest practical benefits Heather noticed after treatment was being able to eat without the limitations she had experienced before.

Missing, loose, or painful teeth can make chewing difficult and may cause people to change what they eat without even realizing it.

The CDC notes that tooth loss can contribute to difficulty eating and speaking and can negatively affect overall quality of life.

For Heather, stable implant-supported teeth meant she could eat comfortably again without constantly thinking about her teeth.

A Smile That Changed More Than Her Teeth

Dental Implants Before and After Stubbs Dental

Perhaps the biggest transformation wasn’t what Heather could eat. It was how she felt about herself.

Before dental implants, Heather avoided showing her teeth in photographs, and she often worried about her smile when interacting with customers at work.

Those small moments added up.

When you spend years thinking about your teeth every time you smile, speak, laugh, eat, or take a picture, dental problems can begin to affect much more than your mouth.

The CDC recognizes that tooth loss can contribute to lower self-esteem and reduced quality of life. For many patients, restoring their teeth can be about more than improving chewing ability. It can also mean feeling comfortable smiling and interacting with others again.

Today, Heather doesn’t feel the same need to hide her smile.
